MADRID, JULY 4 - A group of miners protesting against the possible closure of coal mines in the Asturias region are continuing to set up road blocks and to clash with police over a month since the beginning of their protest.
Protesters this morning set on fire tires and created barricades on the AS 117 highway in Porto de Tarna, near Langreo in the Asturias.
Civil Guards sources said that another group of protesters at dawn blocked the A-66 highway and the railway line connecting the Asturias with Madrid. The blocks were subsequently removed.
Meanwhile the so-called 'black march' of miners who left from the Asturias and Andorra to become one long procession on June 26 is continuing and the protesters are expected to arrive in Madrid on July 11.
The miners are planning a big demonstration in the capital to call for state aid and a plan 'to ensure the future of a sector which will otherwise close', union sources said.
