Protests against Bedroom Tax to take place across UK on Saturday

A fortnight ago over 13,000 people across the UK braved the cold weather to demonstrate against the Bedroom Tax.

The same is planned for this weekend. Over 50 Bedroom Tax protests are set to take place on Saturday 30th March 2013 across the United Kingdom, including Glasgow, London, Leeds, Bristol and Cardiff.

The protests are being spearheaded by think-tank Labour Left, who has worked closely with Anti-cuts movements, GMB, Unison, Unite, TUSC, PSC to join forces against this policy which is estimated to impact upon nearly 2 million people across the country.

“The Bedroom Tax penalises 660,000 households, and a total of nearly 2 million men, women and children are affected. According to the government’s own figures, 63% of those penalised are disabled

Cree youth who walked to Ottawa celebrated online

Idle No More

It is said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step – and in the case of a determined group of young people from the James Bay Cree community, that adage is quite literally true.

The Journey of Nishiyuu, which means The Journey of the People in Cree, began in Whapmagoostui, Que. several weeks ago and came to an end on Monday.

Seven walkers -- six young people and a 49-year-old guide master -- left their homes in January determined to walk all the way to the nation's capital.

The Ocean is Turning Into a Plastic Soup. Pledge to Rise Above Plastics.

There is a section of the Pacific Ocean twice the size of the continental United States called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Within it, 100 million tons of plastic swirl in a vortex of currents.

There is so much plastic in the water that it outnumbers zooplankton by six to one!

This plastic ends up in the stomachs of marine birds and animals. In fact, one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die globally each year due to ingestion of or entanglement in plastics.

Plastic is forever, with virtually every piece of petroleum based plastic ever made still in existence. That's why it's so critical to our oceans and beaches that we dramatically reduce our use of plastics, especially single-use plastics, starting today.

Each individual can do their part to rise above plastics and protect the world's oceans, waves and beaches from plastic pollution. We can do several key things that will make a big difference:

- Use reusable bottles for our water and other drinks. By using just one reusable bottle, each person will keep 167 single-use plastic bottles from entering the environment.

- Use cloth bags for groceries and other purchases. For each reusable bag we use, we will save approximately 400 plastics from being used.

- Recycle the plastic bags and bottles we already have. For every thirteen plastic bags we don't use, we will save enough petroleum to drive a car one mile.

Together, we can make a difference for our world's oceans, waves and beaches -- pledge to rise above plastics today.

Building towards the Alter Summit: Athens, 7-8 June

Gathered in Brussels on 15 and 16 March, the members of the Alter Summit network unifying social movements, trade unions and NGOs have taken an important step forward in their attempt to create a European social movement.

Eleven weeks from now, all those in favor of a democratic, social, ecological and feminist Europe will have their eyes on Athens, where numerous events are scheduled to take place on 7 and 8 June.

The choice to organize happenings calling for another Europe in Greece is of crucial importance. For three years, the country has been a laboratory of destructive austerity policies dictated by the Troika.

The time has come to make it the laboratory of a new European vision placing solidarity and the needs of the people in the forefront and to tackle the refoundation of the European Union on a new basis.

On 7 June, a huge assembly will be held in the Peace and Friendship Stadium of Athens. Thousands of activists and committed citizens from Greece and across Europe are expected to attend speeches presenting the “Manifesto of the People”.

This text is based on a long and fruitful discussion led by the components of the Alter Summit network and expresses their common views on what a much-needed reorientation of the European Union should look like.

Beck: Start Hoarding Cash Now!

After a lengthy opening monologue on last night's program in which he declared that "Emperor" Michael Bloomberg is the "most dangerous man in America,"

Glenn Beck turned his attention to the financial crisis in Cyprus and urged his audience to pull their money out of the stock market and out of the banks and start stockpiling it at home since what is happening if Cyprus "will happen here" because "it has happened before; it happened the last time the progressives tried a utopia."

The FBI and Occupy

The Guardian and the ACLU have been fighting for more than a year to get the agency to release its complete files on Occupy.

After a March 8, 2012 Freedom of Information Act request yielded only a few pages, and the FBI claimed it had no more documents, the ACLU filed suit.

In a declaration dated March 15, 2013, David M. Hardy, chief of the FBI’s Information Section, confirms that the agency was sharing information on Occupy with other police agencies. He states that “The mention of the FBI sharing intelligence with another agency doesn’t mean that the document becomes and intelligence or planning document. It is simply documenting that information was shared.”

Humanity Is Transforming And Changing: The Great Awakening

Only a small group of people and the corporations they run are in control of all the world’s resources. When something new comes along and threatens these industries and multinational corporations they put a tremendous amount of effort into concealing and covering up information.

For quite some time the dominating ‘truth givers’ have come from television programming. It’s no secret that mainstream media sources are extremely manipulating. They are owned by a handful of multinational corporations who we all know are in control of government and governmental policy, such as Time Warner, Disney, Viacom, News Corporation, CBS Corporation, and NBC Universal.

What is even more strange is that all of these corporations have connections to each other. Multiple CEO’s and employees are members of the Council On Foreign Relations and all of these organizations always lead up to the same group of families, like the Rockefellers.

What is even more amusing is that the corporations that own and run the mainstream media also own big oil companies, big pharmaceutical companies, big energy companies, big food companies and more.

Basically, a small group of people and the corporations they run own all aspects of our lives.

What is becoming more transparent by the day is that everything that surrounds us is not good for us at all.

For example, the food and pharmaceutical industries both complement each other in that one makes us sick and the other treats us. It’s a cycle.

WAKE UP! WE'RE STRONGER THAN WE THINK.

STRIKE FOR US ALL ON BUDGET DAY

On Budget day Tory Chancellor will hand a tax cut to the rich whilst he continues to make ordinary people suffer for a crisis we didnt create.

They want to cut our community services our pay and conditions and even our benefits should we need the safety net of the welfare state.

We are calling on members of the public, Trade unionists, Community campaigners and anyone else who is sick of cuts and austerity. To join with the brave PCS union members taking strike action against cuts and austerity. We are asking people to join the pickets outside job centres and the Department of Work and Pensions buildings.

The Disaster of Debt Based Economics

13 years ago … when national debt was just £400 billion … Michael Rowbotham, the author of The Grip of Death, gave this talk on “The Disaster of Debt Based Economics”

Powerful speech on the topic of Monetary Reform, that brings a holistic view on the consequences of our current monetary system and the necessity for change. Certainly worth watching:

The Origin of Education and Mandatory Schooling

Prior to the late 1800′s, education was a private practice that took place in private institutions or through home schooling.

That all changed in 1902 when John D. Rockefeller created the general education board in conjunction with Frederick T. Gates. Frederick T. Gates was a close friend, business and personal advisor to Rockefeller.

The general education board was responsible for funding the American public school system, and provided over one hundred million dollars in 1902 while continuing their support beyond 1902. If we follow the money, the general education board was responsible for the creation of the American public school system.

Does education not play a large role in manipulating the consciousness of human beings? By consciousness manipulation I mean trying to influence the way that the human being perceives the environment around them.

In order to implement this system, teachers need to teach, and somebody needs to teach the teachers, and somebody needs to teach them too. It’s time we start questioning the real purpose of education and who exactly is putting human beings through this system, and for what purpose?

“I don’t want a nation of thinkers, I want a nation of workers.” – John D Rockefeller

Follow the money and WAKE UP!

Occupy Monsanto Founder Fritz G. Kreiss: Momentum is Building for GMO Labeling

Occupy Monsanto sprung up soon after the Occupy Wall Street campaign got in to full flow.

What makes these campaigns similar? Occupy Monsanto was simply created to recognize at an opportune time to highlight the endemic problems in our food and economic situations and how they relate.

That, combined with my own training in natural health and nutrition, allowed for the chance to create a movement to highlight the corruption in our food system, along with the FDA, and the USDA themselves as well as raise awareness on many health and sustainability issues that people can make differences in their own lives by choosing foods, products, and sources that both increase their own health as well as that of the environment while also helping support the small scale farmers that need our support to protect them against the industrial mega-farms that have taken over in recent years.

Over 100 Guantánamo Prisoners on Hunger Strike, Citing Threat of Return to "Darkest Days Under Bush"

More than 100 detainees held in the U.S. military prison at Guantánamo Bay are reportedly entering their fifth week of a hunger strike sparked by deteriorating conditions.

News of the hunger strike first emerged last week, but it appears the action involves far more prisoners than previously thought. In a letter to his attorney, one detainee wrote:

"We are in danger. One of the soldiers fired on one of the brothers a month ago. Before that, they send the emergency forces with M-16 weapons into one of the brothers’ cell blocks. ... Now they want to return us to the darkest days under [George W.] Bush.

Spain takes to streets in tens of thousands against unemployment, economic scandals (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Tens of thousands of demonstrators are marching in dozens of Spanish cities to protest record unemployment rates and the government’s handling of the economic and corruption scandals. It comes just after Spain’s jobless figure hit the 5 million mark.

Rallies have been organized in Madrid and 60 other cities by 150 organizations, including trade unions representing the construction, car, television, police, and health services industries. The actions were called "against unemployment and for the renewal of democracy," the UGT, one of the biggest trade unions, said in a statement.

5 Ways Privatization Is Poisoning America

Keep it to yourselves

ONE of the hallmarks of the Conservative government led by Stephen Harper, Canada’s prime minister, has been its ultra-tight control of communications.

A central group in the Privy Council Office, the department that supports the prime minister and cabinet, vets most speeches, news releases and responses to media queries, and provides talking points to help ministers and bureaucrats toe the party line. They are usually offered a simple choice: Sing from the same songbook or shut up.

From the government’s point of view this approach has worked splendidly, with politicians and officials delivering a uniform message. Journalists are less happy, however, and complain about receiving responses long after deadlines have passed—if their inquiries are answered at all.

An even more disgruntled group is scientists working for the state, who say their ability to explain their research and findings to the people who pay for it—the Canadian public—has been severely restricted.

FDA Admits Chicken Meat Contains Arsenic

It’s been over 6 years since The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) found that chicken contained Arsenic.

With the risk of being exposed, the FDA has finally admitted to this fact and no longer can they continue with their desire to sweep this information under the rug.

Ingested inorganic arsenic is metabolized to mono and dimethylated compounds, these are predominantly found in urine.

Big pharmaceutical companies produce and sell four arsenic compounds that are added to animal feed for turkey, chicken and swine production to increase weight and improve pigmentation of the meat.

As far back as 2006, the IATP’s reportPlaying Chicken: Avoiding Arsenic in your meat estimated that more than 70 percent of all U.S. chickens raised for meat are fed arsenic. That report found detectable levels of arsenic in many  brand name poultry products form supermarkets and fast food restaurants.

One way farmers add arsenic to chicken feed is through drugs like Pfizer’s Roxarsone Arsenic’s a poison that causes cancer, among other harm. The FDA can’t seriously uphold its public health mission while allowing residues of arsenic in the meat our children and families eat. – David Wallinga, M.D. IATP

BOYCOTT KELLOGG’S GMOs!

Kellogg contributed almost $800,000 to a deceptive advertising campaign that defeated Prop. 37, which would have required the labeling of genetically engineered foods in California.

This company does not support transparency or truth in labeling and has no regard for the health and safety of consumers who buy their products.

Whole Foods: Products Will Carry GMO Labeling

Whole Foods says all products in its North American stores that contain genetically modified ingredients will be labeled as such by 2018.

The company says it’s the first national grocery chain to set such a deadline for labeling foods that contain genetically modified organisms, or GMOs.

A spokeswoman for the supermarket operator said organic foods will not have to carry the labels since they do not contain genetically modified ingredients by definition.

We're winning, slowly but surely.  Keep on going, solidarity!

Toxic Tanneries

The tanneries, which export hundreds of millions of dollars in leather for luxury goods throughout the world, spew pollutants into surrounding communities.

This report documents an occupational health and safety crisis among tannery workers, both men and women, including skin diseases and respiratory illnesses caused by exposure to tanning chemicals, and limb amputations caused by accidents in dangerous tannery machinery.

Residents of Hazaribagh slums complain of illnesses such as fevers, skin diseases, respiratory problems, and diarrhea, caused by the extreme tannery pollution of air, water, and soil.

The government has not protected the right to health of the workers and residents, has consistently failed to enforce labor or environmental laws in Hazaribagh, and has ignored High Court orders to clean up these tanneries.

How To Win The War For Your Mind

For the past century, at least in the United States, a subversive and secret cold war has been waged against the people in the form of psychological subjugation.

This cold war is designed to weaken our resolve, our heritage, our self-belief, our confidence and our integrity in preparation for a “hot war” against our time-honored Constitutional rights.

The power elite know well that the most effective strategy for victory in any battle is to convince your enemy to surrender before the fight even begins.

Today, the American populace is being conditioned to lie down and die a mental death, to give up the inner war, so that when the outer war comes, they will already be defeated.

Corrupt governments rely heavily on what they call “psyops,” which are primarily propaganda initiatives meant to demoralize their target (usually the citizenry). In the case of a despotic regime, psyops involves the insinuation of lies, half-truths, threats and brutality that is choreographed to elicit a very specific reaction.

It is used to instigate strong emotional responses en masse that will work in favor of the oligarchy. The following guidelines can shield you from the arrows of deceit, allowing you to maintain control and avoid being unconsciously influenced to labor against your own cause…

Noam Chomsky: Can Civilization Survive Capitalism?

Capitalism as it exists today is radically incompatible with democracy.

This observation generalizes: Throughout the world, indigenous societies are struggling to protect what they sometimes call “the rights of nature,” while the civilized and sophisticated scoff at this silliness.

This is all exactly the opposite of what rationality would predict – unless it is the skewed form of reason that passes through the filter of RECD.

(Noam Chomsky's new book is ``Power Systems: Conversations on Global Democratic Uprisings and the New Challenges to U.S. Empire. Conversations with David Barsamian.'' Chomsky is emeritus professor of linguistics and philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass.)

Why Are Walmart Billionaires Bankrolling Phony School ‘Reform’ In LA?

The Walton family became America’s richest family by creating a retail model built on ruthless cost-cutting, low wages and few benefits.

So, it isn’t surprising that some studies show that charter school teachers are paid less than teachers at traditional public schools and have few years of education on average. Is this the right model for our schools?

If we are serious about the future of our children, we must ask: why are the Waltons, a largely out-of-state family with no ties to Los Angeles’ children and little background in education, intent on turning our communities’ educational choices into a junior version of the cut-throat, profiteering corporate world?

It’s time for us to take a hard look at ideological billionaires who are throwing their wealth into undermining our schools — before our children pay the real price.

US Climate Bomb is Ticking: What the Gas Industry Doesn't Want You to Know

There is another climate bomb in the United States, shale gas hydraulic fracking, which emits methane, more dangerous than CO2.

While many rhetorically call natural gas a bridge to the clean energy future, new information is showing the opposite; natural gas will hasten climate change, poisons the air, land and water, and carries unacceptable risks to our health.

Human Rights Body Criticizes U.S. for NYPD's Policing of Occupy Wall Street

Rendered in plain language: By arresting shoving, obstructing, and kettling journalists, the NYPD broke international human rights law.

And if you've ever wondered why members of a free press should require licensure from the police to do their job, the international human rights observers agree with you:
With respect to journalists' access to assembly locations and to other restrictive measures imposed on them by the police, such as arrests, it should be noted that the authorities should not distinguish between accredited journalists and those without credentials, including citizen journalists, by limiting the ability of the latter to carry out their reporting work.
The report also criticizes the NYPD's (and other police departments') use of kettling, the practice of herding and detaining large groups of people without actually arresting them, and suggests that New York and other cities probably could have found better ways to manage Occupy's public encampments than rolling them up in secretive commando-style operations conducted in the dead of night while doing everything they could to prevent journalists from covering their actions.

Denmark Students - Too Many Cuts - Austerity

Thousands of students in Denmark gathered yesterday, 28/2 in front of the Danish Parliament, Christiansborg, in Copenhagen. They protested against an intended reduction of the so-called ''SU'' (State Study Support).

The organizers of the demonstration, the students organisation ''Danske Studerende Fællesråd'' (DSF) claimed that more than 20,000 students showed up. The students advocate against grant cuts for high school students, for keeping the sixth year of student grants for everybody and to give grants to students - not the private industry.
