Fracking on trial

Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) goes on trial tomorrow at Preston Magistrates Court. Three activists who occupied Cuadrilla Resources drilling rig near Banks, Lancashire on 2nd Nov are charged with aggravated trespass and for the crown to prove it’s case they must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they disrupted ‘lawful activity’.

The defence will be supported by a number of witnesses, both experts (including academics from the UK and US) and from the local community, who will testify regarding the consequences of shale gas extraction, both in terms of climate change and more local effects such as water contamination, air pollution, severe health effects, earthquakes etc.
